Girls in Engineering
JUNE 20 - JUNE 26, 2010
Girls in Engineering brings 7th and 8th grade girls with an interest in mathematics together on the UC Santa Cruz campus for a unique introduction to engineering. Students from across Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Monterey Counties get hands-on exposure to engineering through fun projects, such as building and programming a robot. The program enables girls to imagine themselves as future engineers and exposes them to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) college and career pathways. Students learn about a variety of topics, including robotics, computer science, electrical and civil engineering, applied mechanics, environmental engineering, and biomedical engineering.
APPLY TODAY! Middle school girls in 7th and 8th grades from Santa Cruz, Santa Clara and Monterey Counties with strong mathematics skills are encouraged to apply; preference will be given to students currently enrolled in Algebra I. About 30 students will be accepted into the program at no cost. Room and board at the UCSC campus will be provided. The application deadline is April 2, 2010.

Founded by the National Academy of Engineering, EngineerGirl.org is part of an NAE project to bring national attention to the opportunity that engineering represents for all people at any age, but particularly to women and girls. EngineerGirl! features contests, an interactive gallery of women currently working in engineering, a question-and-answer forum for website visitors, and lots of other great resources that allow young girls to explore and find interest in the field of engineering. Developed by WGHB Boston, the National Academy of Engineering and a coloition of engineering organizations, EngineerYourLife.org features ten great reasons to become an engineer, streaming video of inspiring women engineers, descriptions of dream engineering jobs, and advice for parents, educators, and engineers on how to talk to high school girls about engineering.
The Girls in Engineering program is sponsored by the UC Santa Cruz Educational Partnership Center in partnership with the UCSC Jack Baskin School of Engineering.
