California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP)

Governed through the University of California Office of the President, the UC Santa Cruz California Reading and Literature Project is one of nine California Subject Matter Projects, supporting a network of teachers with professional development and leadership designed to improve reading and literature instruction across California. The CRLP mission marks student achievement as a central goal and teacher leadership and quality professional development as the primary vehicles to serve this goal.

In 2005-06, CRLP-Monterey Bay Region served 928 participants from 72 schools. Our primary district partnerships include the Pajaro Valley Unified School District, North Monterey County Unified School District, and Alisal Union School District. CRLP has also worked closely with Santa Cruz City Schools, Hollister School District, Soledad Unified School District, Greenfield Union Elementary, and Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.

  • CRLP offers technical assistance to schools and districts to address No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Teacher Requirements and other NCLB goals outlined in district LEA plans.
  • CRLP offers a variety of K-6 institutes that are designed to deepen the content knowledge necessary to implement the State Board of Education-adopted English Language Arts Content Standards, Curricular Frameworks, and State-recommended reading adoptions.
  • The ELD/Academic Language Development Institutes prepare teachers to effectively teach English throughout the instructional day with a particular emphasis on how to link language instruction to reading instruction, using State Board of Education-adopted reading programs.
  • Secondary Academic Language Tools (SALT) institutes prepare cross-content middle and high school educators to plan purposeful instruction to address English Language Arts Standards linked to the California High School Exit Exam and the California Standards Test.
  • The A Development English Proficiency Test (ADEPT) is a valid and reliable oral language assessment instrument that can be used with students across K-8 grade levels. ADEPT assesses a student’s ability to understand and generate utterances using a scope and sequence of language forms or structures across the five levels of English proficiency.
