Developing Effective Engineering Pathways (DEEP)

About DEEP

UC Santa Cruz has joined with Foothill College and De Anza College on the Developing Effective Engineering Pathways (DEEP) program. Funded by a National Science Foundation grant, DEEP identifies and supports students from underrepresented populations to enter the field of engineering and provides ongoing advising, academic support, and enrichment opportunities to help students create a successful educational plan leading to a career in engineering. DEEP is designed to address the changing needs of engineering students as they move through the community college system, transfer as juniors to UC Santa Cruz, and graduate from the UCSC Jack Baskin School of Engineering.

Our approach is multi-faceted and tailored to meet the specific needs of students at the differing developmental stages of the educational process. The program links to existing high school programs and provides students with information, courses, and resources that will support them in pursuing an engineering degree. For second-year and transfer-ready students, the program increases tutorial services, academic counseling, and research opportunities. With a solid academic foundation built at the community college, DEEP participants will successfully transfer to complete four-year engineering degrees. Participants who meet all requirements of the DEEP program are guaranteed transfer to the UCSC Jack Baskin School of Engineering.

Incoming transfer students also participate in a summer bridge program at UCSC. Key to this effort is the coordination between the Foothill-De Anza Community Colleges and UCSC faculty. Working groups, with membership from each institution, design new courses and improve articulation and course alignment, while developing a regional community of engineering educators.

Students who are enrolled at another regional community college and interested in engineering may be invited to some DEEP activities and field trips on a space-available basis. For information, please contact the Transfer Partnerships Program Outreach Representative who serves the community college.

Visit the DEEP Web site for more information and listing of upcoming events.

Mentor Program

Would you like to earn $200 and support community college students in their quest to transfer to a four year engineering college? For just 20 minutes per week, you can motivate and help transfer students to reach their educational goals.

The purpose of the Mentor Program is to encourage the development of a meaningful relationship between each mentor and mentee. Our mentees are current students at De Anza and Foothill Community Colleges who are planning to transfer to a four-year college in the near future. We are looking for friendly and helpful mentors who are willing to reach out to their mentee at least once a week via email or phone. The mentors will be matched with one student and participate in three required program activities with their mentee for the quarter.

Required Program Activities:

  1. Time Management: Discussing and exchanging your current schedule with each other.
  2. Mentor Shadow Day: Meeting with your mentee for a portion of your regular school day at UCSC. The day will consist of having lunch with the student, giving them a tour of the campus, and taking them to at least one engineering class.
  3. Education and Career Goals: Working with your mentee to make sure they have education and/or career goals.

If you are interested in being a mentor, visit the DEEP Web site for more information.
